The journey
Driving from Kolkata to Shantiniketan
Shantiniketan is the shortest of our popular outstation routes and one of the most rewarding. Three and a half hours from Kolkata puts you in Tagore's Visva-Bharati, among the open-air classrooms, the Kala Bhavana murals and the quiet red-earth landscape of Birbhum.
Weekends here fill quickly, particularly around Poush Mela in December and Basanta Utsav at Holi. During those festivals the town is transformed and utterly worth visiting, but accommodation and cars both need booking well in advance.
The Saturday haat at Sonajhuri, held in the forest, is the single most popular reason our guests make this trip — tribal handicrafts, Baul singers and khoai landscape, all within a short drive of Bolpur.
Where we stop along the way
- 1
Burdwan
Famous for sitabhog and mihidana — worth stopping for.
- 2
Guskara
Quiet halt as you enter the red soil of Birbhum.

Kolkata to Shantiniketan — Frequently Asked Questions
Can Shantiniketan be done as a day trip from Kolkata?
Yes, comfortably. Three and a half hours each way leaves a full afternoon there. That said, an overnight stay lets you catch the Saturday haat and the evening atmosphere, which is where the real charm lies.
Can we add Tarapith to the trip?
Yes. Tarapith is about 75 km from Shantiniketan and is very commonly combined with it, particularly by guests making the trip for religious reasons.
