The journey
Driving from Kolkata to Deoghar
Deoghar is home to the Baidyanath Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve holiest Shiva shrines in India, and for a large number of our guests it is the single most important journey they make all year. We treat it accordingly.
The drive is around 370 km and takes about seven hours through Durgapur and Asansol. It is comfortably done in a day, and many pilgrims prefer to leave Kolkata very early, take darshan in the afternoon, stay the night and return the following morning.
During Shravan, in July and August, the entire route fills with kanwariyas walking to the temple and the roads near Deoghar slow to a crawl. If you are travelling in that period, book early, expect delays, and let us plan the timing with you — we run this route through Shravan every year and know how it moves.

Kolkata to Deoghar — Frequently Asked Questions
Can we visit Basukinath on the same trip?
Yes, and traditionally the two are visited together. Basukinath is 42 km from Deoghar and adds only a couple of hours. We include it as standard on request.
How crowded is Deoghar during Shravan?
Extremely. The roads fill with pilgrims on foot and queues at the temple can run many hours. It is a remarkable experience, but plan for delays and book your vehicle well in advance.
