The journey

Driving from Kolkata to Gangtok

Sikkim rewards the long drive. Gangtok is orderly, spotless and genuinely beautiful, and it opens onto some of the most dramatic high-altitude scenery accessible by road anywhere in India — Tsomgo Lake at 12,400 feet, Baba Mandir, and on a clear permit day, Nathu La on the Chinese border.

The practical complication is permits. Indian nationals need a permit for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, and these must be arranged in advance with photographs and identity documents. We handle this as part of the booking, which saves you a frustrating morning in a government office.

The road follows the Teesta river from Sevoke onwards and it is spectacular, but it is also landslide-prone in the monsoon. Between June and September we will always advise you honestly on current conditions rather than take a booking we are not confident about.

Before you book

Kolkata to Gangtok — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for Sikkim?

Indian nationals do not need a permit for Gangtok itself, but do need one for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim. We arrange these — send us your ID and photographs when you book.

Can my Kolkata cab drive up to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La?

No, and this catches many travellers out. Only Sikkim-registered vehicles with local permits may go beyond Gangtok to those points. We arrange a local permitted vehicle for that day while your main car waits in Gangtok.

How many days should I plan for Gangtok?

Five days minimum from Kolkata — two travelling, three there. Adding North Sikkim's Lachung and Yumthang Valley needs seven.
