The journey
Driving from Kolkata to Darjeeling
Darjeeling by road from Kolkata is a serious drive — roughly 620 km, the last 80 of which climb steeply through hairpin bends from Siliguri. We will not pretend it is a short trip. What we will say is that arriving with your own car and driver means Tiger Hill at 4 AM is a simple matter rather than a negotiation with a shared jeep.
Almost everyone breaks this journey. The standard pattern is an overnight halt at Siliguri, then the climb up in the morning when the light is good and the road is dry. We strongly recommend this over attempting it in one push, both for your comfort and for your driver's alertness on the mountain section.
A word on vehicles: send an Innova or Crysta up this road. Hill driving punishes small engines, and the reliability of a Toyota on a wet mountain descent is not a place to economise. Our hill-route drivers are specifically experienced on this stretch.
Where we stop along the way
- 1

Good highway restaurants, about three hours out of Kolkata.
- 2
Farakka Barrage
The crossing of the Ganga; expect some delay at peak times.
- 3

Common lunch halt, famous for its mangoes in season.
- 4
Siliguri
The gateway to the hills and the usual overnight break.

Kolkata to Darjeeling — Frequently Asked Questions
Should I break the journey to Darjeeling?
We strongly recommend it. An overnight stop at Siliguri turns a punishing thirteen-hour day into two comfortable ones, and means your driver takes on the mountain section fresh rather than exhausted.
Which vehicle is best for Darjeeling?
An Innova or Innova Crysta. Hill roads demand engine power and dependable brakes, and the ride quality over rough mountain surfaces is significantly better than in a sedan.
Can the same car take us to Gangtok afterwards?
Yes, and it is a popular combination. Darjeeling to Gangtok is about 100 km. Do note that Sikkim requires separate permits for some areas, which we help arrange.
