The journey
Driving from Kolkata to Gangasagar
Gangasagar is unusual among our routes because the car cannot complete the journey. We drive you the 105 km to Harwood Point at Kakdwip, and from there a ferry carries you across to Sagar Island for the Kapil Muni Temple. Your driver and vehicle wait at the jetty for your return.
During Makar Sankranti in mid-January, this becomes one of the largest religious gatherings in India, with lakhs of pilgrims converging on the island. It is an extraordinary thing to witness, and it requires patience — ferry queues are long and the roads to Kakdwip are heavily congested.
Outside the mela period it is a quiet and manageable day trip. Leave Kolkata early, catch a morning ferry, take darshan and be back the same evening. We run it as a comfortable one-day booking.
Where we stop along the way
- 1
Diamond Harbour
The Hooghly riverside; a pleasant stop on the way.
- 2
Kakdwip
Where the road ends and the ferry to Sagar Island begins.
