The journey
Driving from Kolkata to Bakkhali
Bakkhali is the quiet alternative. Barely 130 km from Kolkata, it has none of Digha's crowds or commercial sprawl — just a long, flat beach lined with casuarina, a handful of modest hotels, and the Sundarbans beginning just to the east.
The drive takes about three and a half hours through Diamond Harbour and Namkhana. There is a bridge crossing at Namkhana that used to require a ferry and no longer does, which has made the trip considerably easier than it was a few years ago.
Henry Island next door is worth the short detour, with a watchtower looking out over mangrove and mudflat. Frasergunj, the fishing harbour a couple of kilometres along, is the other reason to come — the catch comes in each afternoon.
Where we stop along the way

Kolkata to Bakkhali — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bakkhali better than Digha for a quiet trip?
For quiet, yes, without question. Bakkhali has far fewer visitors and a more natural stretch of coast. Digha has more hotels, restaurants and things to do — the trade-off is straightforward.
Can we add the Sundarbans to a Bakkhali trip?
Yes, though the main Sundarbans boat tours leave from Godkhali near Gosaba rather than Bakkhali. We can plan a combined itinerary covering both.
